So you’ve finally decided to take the plunge and use your WoodenMojo chopping board, but now you’re unsure of the best procedure for cleaning it. (hint: DON’T use the dishwasher)

Here are the basic steps to clean and more importantly, prolong the life of your board for years and years;

Step 1: Give your board a good scrub with warm-hot soapy water on all sides. I like to use these handled sponges, but any sponge or washcloth will work, just be thorough and make sure to scrub off any food residue left on the board.

Step 2: Rinse off all of the soap and dry the board with a towel.

Step 3 (Optional): Once every 1 or 2 months, I recommend reconditioning your board with a coat of oil. I personally use Linseed oil on all of my boards as once it has cured it forms a protective layer on the wood and also adds a more water-resistant element to it. If you don’t have any linseed oil, you can always use standard kitchen cooking oils (olive, peanut, vegetable). Just drizzle some oil onto the board, wipe it all over making sure to coat the entire board, wipe off any excess with paper towels, then leave it to dry and cure for 24 hours before the next use.

 It is commonly advised to use Parafin (mineral) oil to condition wooden boards as it is a food-safe oil, however, I would advise against this as Parafin oil never cures, which means that it has a much higher chance of absorbing and leaving bacteria in the wood fibres.
